Peace of Mind Starts Here

Diana sits down with Savannah to share why a will matters.

Savannah: Diana, August is “Make A Will Month.” For those who may not be familiar, why is this something we’re talking about at Pima Foundation?

Diana: “August is all about shining a light on something we sometimes put off thinking about, our will and our legacy. At Pima Foundation, we see legacy planning as more than just legal paperwork. It’s about making sure your values, your vision, and the difference you want to make in the world continue well beyond your lifetime”.

Savannah: A lot of people think a will is just for people with large estates. Why does having one matter so much?

Diana: “A will is not just a piece of paper, it’s your voice after you’re gone. It’s how you ensure your assets are distributed the way you want, how your loved ones are cared for, and how your philanthropic wishes are honored. Whether your priority is family, friends, or a cause close to your heart, your will makes sure those intentions are carried out exactly as you planned”.

Savannah: But we know a lot of people still don’t have one. Why is that?

Diana: “Unfortunately, only about 24% of Americans have a will. That means more than three-quarters pass away without a plan, which can leave their families navigating probate and state laws without any guidance. The reasons as to why, are actually pretty relatable:

  • Procrastination: 43% say they just haven’t gotten around to it.
  • Perceived lack of assets: 40% believe they don’t own enough to justify having one.
  • Cost and confusion: Some feel estate planning is too complicated or expensive.

But the truth is, no matter your circumstances, a will brings peace of mind for you and for those you love”.

Savannah: So why should someone start the process now?

Diana: “Life is unpredictable. Having a plan in place ensures you’re prepared, no matter what. Since August is Make A Will Month, I wanted to take this time to remind others this could be the perfect time to start or revisit your estate plan. It’s also a great opportunity to think about how your legacy could support future generations, maybe even through a gift to Pima Foundation. Those kinds of decisions can have an impact for decades”.

Savannah: For someone who’s ready to take the first step, what do you recommend?

Diana: “Talk to a trusted estate planning attorney or financial advisor. If you’re considering including Pima Foundation in your will, we’d be happy to have a conversation with you about how your gift can make a lasting impact on students’ lives.

This month is a reminder that your legacy matters. Let’s make sure it reflects the life you’ve lived and the future you want to help shape.”
