The Future Starts With A Skill

September is Workforce Development Month and at Pima Community College, workforce education gives students opportunities to build practical, job-ready skills through short-term courses and accelerated training programs. Students can explore fields ranging from information technology and healthcare to construction, transportation, advanced manufacturing and business, all while choosing flexible options that fit around work and life.

And that flexibility matters because not everyone can put their life on hold for two or four years. Maybe you’re already working or you’re raising a family, or maybe you want to switch careers. Pima’s workforce programs are designed with those realities in mind. Programs like PimaFastTrack can help students earn industry-recognized credentials and build in-demand skills in as little as two to six months.

The goal isn’t simply to get students into a classroom, but rather have them be workforce ready when they complete their education because Southern Arizona needs skilled workers. Employers need people who are prepared to step into today’s jobs while continuing to adapt to tomorrow’s technology and changing industries. Pima works directly with local employers to develop customized training and workforce solutions that support both employees and business growth.

We’ve seen firsthand what that can look like throughout the College in the past couple of years with new innovative and advanced centers of excellence in health professions, hospitality leadership and applied technology.

Each of these centers are places where education meets the workforce. Where a student can move from learning a new skill, to developing ones they encompass and feel confident as they move into their career. And that transition is powerful.

At Pima Foundation, we have the privilege of supporting that work because investing in workforce development means investing in the people who will keep Southern Arizona moving forward.

That investment can be seen in a variety of ways such as supporting students who are building new careers, provide program assistance to access the equipment and resources needed to provide meaningful, hands-on learning, or even bringing donors, employers, community partners and educators together around a shared belief that when people have access to opportunity, everyone benefits.

One skill at a time, one student at a time, opportunity sprouts for a thriving community.
