A New Era in Healthcare Education

Nestled in Tucson’s desert landscape, framed by the striking Catalina Mountains, a new beacon of innovation within healthcare education has risen—the Pima Community College Center of Excellence in Health Professions. Scheduled for its public debut with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, January 24, this state-of-the-art facility represents the future of healthcare education in Southern Arizona.

True to Pima Community College’s mission to “empower every learner, every day, for every goal,” this cutting-edge hub is poised to redefine education and training in the health professions. With expanded access to healthcare programs, innovative credentials such as Marketable Skills Awards and Advanced Technical Certificates, and opportunities for lifelong learning, the Center is dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of learners and the community.

At its heart, the Center of Excellence in Health Professions is more than a building—it’s a bold commitment to shaping compassionate, skilled healthcare leaders. The Center will foster interdisciplinary learning through advanced technologies, including augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) tools, immersive simulation labs, and state-of-the-art healthcare equipment like Anatomage and Syndaver. These resources, integrated within over 80,000 square feet of experimental learning spaces, create a 21st-century educational experience unlike any other in the region.

Beyond its technological factors, the facility is designed to inspire collaboration and community. Reimagined spaces provide students with welcoming environments for teamwork and study, while a new glass entry lobby, interactive display screens, and a community room invite visitors to explore the Center’s dynamic programs and activities.

The Center of Excellence in Health Professions plays a pivotal role in addressing Arizona’s growing healthcare needs. With a projected 176,000 new healthcare jobs in the state by 2028 and critical shortages in direct care workers, the Center is preparing graduates to meet these demands. Through partnerships with high schools, rural outreach initiatives, and expanded program offerings at the Santa Cruz Learning Center, the Center is increasing access to vital training for the next generation of healthcare professionals.

From launching a Community Health Worker Certificate program to expanding dual enrollment options for high school students in fields like Certified Nursing Assistant and Medical Assistant, the Center is building pathways for students to achieve their goals and strengthen their communities.

The Center’s achievements already speak volumes. Pima graduates boast a 100% pass rate on the ACLS national certification exam, with programs consistently exceeding national averages in retention, completion, and job placement. Every year, more than 800 graduates enter the workforce, touching over one million patient lives annually throughout their careers—a testament to the impact of Pima’s commitment to quality education.

As healthcare continues to evolve, the Center of Excellence in Health Professions remains steadfast in its mission to innovate and expand programs to meet the needs of the industry and community. Whether through beta-testing cutting-edge technologies, supporting research and training, or forging new partnerships, the Center is shaping a future where healthcare education and well-being thrive.

With the opening of this remarkable facility, Pima Community College reinforces its role as a leader in healthcare education, empowering students and transforming communities across Southern Arizona and beyond.
