Agnes Hannley was full of life, and in her own words she wanted people to know that “she liked herself”. She was truly an amazing woman who spoke her mind, had strong convictions, and was always available to provide advice and wise counsel. Agnes lost her first husband, a pilot, in the second World War. His death left her to raise a daughter on her own until she met Vincent P. Hannley, who like her deceased husband was also in the United States Air Force. Although not a pilot, Vince did fly over the skies of Europe and Africa as a navigator in the 43rd Bomber Wing. Vince adopted Agnes’ young daughter as his own, and together they grew their family with the addition of three more daughters and four sons. Agnes was often left on her own to raise the eight children as Vince was at one time stationed in Greenland for an entire year.

As the years passed, they moved from air base to air base, living in 21 homes over 30 years. One of these airbases was none other than Davis Monthan Air Force Base where Vince, now a Colonel, served in the role of Deputy Base Commander. When it came time to retire, Vince and Agnes chose Tucson as their home. Throughout the years, Agnes was very passionate about her work with the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) whose mission is to “strive to motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations”.

Agnes and Vince Hannley believed in the power of education. The military life the family shared was built on discipline and commitment. To honor these three elements (education, discipline, and commitment), The Agnes Hannley and Col. Vincent P. Hannley Endowment will provide funding to support military spouses in their pursuit of advancing their education or obtaining a skill from any of the many degrees and/or certifications offered at Pima Community College.
