Cycling With A Purpose

The early morning light of Tucson glistens against the foothills, casting long shadows over the desert landscape as cyclists and runners gather at the Tucson Convention Center, the starting line for the 41st El Tour de Tucson, on November 23, 2024. Those on bikes will ride through new parts of the majestic Sonoran Desert including Davis Monthan Air Force Base, the mountainous and saguaro lined vistas of Old Spanish Trail and the historic Colossal Cave. The route will also pass through the communities of Corona de Tucson, Vail, Sahuarita and Green Valley. While runners hit the pavement amongst the streets of downtown Tucson.

This isn’t just any race—it’s a symbol of community, health, and giving back. For Pima Foundation, participating in this iconic event is more than just cycling through the scenic routes of Southern Arizona; it’s an opportunity to bring hope, education, and a brighter future to students at Pima Community College.

Pedaling for a Cause

As the Foundation embarks on its El Tour journey, we are reminded of why we ride. Since its inception, El Tour de Tucson has supported countless charitable organizations, raising nearly $121 million for causes that touch lives both locally and globally. This year, Pima Foundation aims to raise $7,500—a goal that will go directly towards non-institutional scholarships, enhanced academic programs, and improved campus facilities. Every pedal, every mile, contributes to a vision of expanded access to education in our community.

The Foundation’s participants, from college staff or faculty members to college supporters or students, will take part in various events, including the breathtaking bike rides and the 5K run. It’s not just about the physical challenge—it’s about bringing together a diverse group of riders, runners, and supporters, all united by the desire to make a difference.

Building Connections, One Mile at a Time

When you join the Pima Foundation team, you’re not just riding for fitness or fun. You’re riding to support students like those you see every day at Pima Community College. You become part of a legacy of giving that has, for over 40 years, shaped the lives of thousands of students. Pima Foundation’s Director of Operations, Saby Andino puts it simply: “I care about the work the Foundation is doing for the College. I see firsthand how the contributions transform lives.”

For many riders, this event is deeply personal. Missy Blair, Pima Community College’s Academic Director for Transportation and Logistics, describes her reason for participating: “Once a year, I like to use my cycling to raise funds for a cause important to me. This year, I am happy and honored to raise funds for Pima Foundation because of the work they do to improve our community members’ lives.”

How You Can Join the Ride

Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or runner, or just looking to be part of something greater, El Tour offers you a chance to contribute. Through Pima Foundation, you can participate in the ride, by joining our nonprofit team and setting a fundraising goal of your choosing. Each dollar raised will help a student find their path to success—one that might otherwise be out of reach.

A Community Coming Together

With over 9,000 cyclists annually, El Tour de Tucson fosters camaraderie, mutual support, and a shared sense of purpose. We hope to see you as a cyclist pedaling the stunning roads of Tucson, from Oro Valley to Green Valley, or even as a runner along the streets of downtown. We stand with you, whether we are racing or cheering from the sidelines with the Tucson community.

Thank you for your support.
