A History of Fighting Spirit: What Hispanic Heritage Month Means to Zulma.

From Zulma Tapia,

Hispanic Heritage Month is a beautiful way of honoring Latino cultures living in the United States by celebrating our contributions to this nation, which go beyond the delicious food, diverse music, and amazing art. Different countries with unique traditions and history, yet united by one thing: a fighting spirit. If there is something I admire about my people, it is that no matter how hard the situation is, we will find a way to move forward. This is the most valuable inheritance we received from our ancestors and what we continue to teach our younger generations. We inspire others by not giving up, and we contribute the best of our cultures.

As an immigrant in this nation, I have faced different challenges. However, that same fighting spirit was transmitted to me by my mom, who came to this country with a suitcase full of hopes and dreams for me and my siblings. She didn’t speak English and had no formal education, but that didn’t stop her. I admire her bravery in moving from her comfort zone to find better opportunities. She has taught me to carry myself forward.

To me, Hispanic Heritage is more than a celebration, it’s a mirror that reflects who I am. Hispanic Heritage Month is my chance to honor my language, my customs, and my story in this country. It’s about reclaiming pride in where I came from and how far I’ve come. I think of the quiet victories that don’t make the headlines but have shaped my life. I celebrate this month not only for my culture, but for the legacy I hope to leave behind: one of courage and unbreakable spirit.
