From Cassondra Forste,
While I honestly answer demographic questions as being Hispanic and multi-racial, I have a limited connection to my heritage as someone who has often lightheartedly described themselves as a “broken Mexican” (no affinity for spicy food). However, considering the theme of “honoring the past, inspiring the future,” I reflected on important lessons imparted by my grandparents.
My grandfather’s family emigrated from Spain to Los Angeles, while my grandmother’s parents relocated from Mexico to Orange County. Both lineages emphasize values of diligence and resilience. My grandfather completed high school, served in the Naval Reserve, and established a construction business. My grandmother left school after eighth grade to work in a fruit packing plant. They eventually married right after my grandfather’s graduation, raised six children, primarily spoke English at home, and reserved Spanish for private discussions.
During weekends and extended stays with cousins over school holidays, my grandparents consistently underscored the significance of faith, integrity, and education. They encouraged active participation in extracurricular activities such as athletics and music and made concerted efforts to attend our events. Their dependable attendance at all high school and college graduations demonstrated their enduring support. Through their example, I learned that core values and family are foundational, and that support would always be available when we acted with integrity.
I endeavor to conduct myself in a way that honors those who shaped my upbringing. I routinely assess whether my actions reflect the fundamental values passed down to me and consider how others may perceive my character as influenced by a strong family environment. The guidance and encouragement I have received have been instrumental in shaping both my ambitions and trajectory. Although continual progress and improvement remain essential, genuine advancement stems from recognizing and learning from those who preceded us. I am forever grateful to my family for raising me to be the person I am today, and I strive to have a meaningful impact on myself and others that would make them proud.
