Spotlight on Teresa Diaz: A Journey of Creativity, Education, and Philanthropy

Born and raised in the vibrant city of Mexico City, Teresa began a journey that would span various cities and fields of expertise. With a passion for design, she followed her dreams to New York, where she graduated from an art school in Brooklyn and spent three years in the industry until she decided to pursue a higher degree as a Museum Studies professional. Teresa was fortunate to receive an internship at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum during her undergraduate studies, sparking a change in her course of life from the experience.

Pursuing graduate studies in Washington, D.C., Tersa immersed herself in the world of museums, working with the Smithsonian Institution and other small historic museums throughout the city. This experience ignited a commitment to education and non-profits, which has continued throughout her professional life.

In addition to her museum work, Teresa has contributed as an Adjunct Faculty member at two community colleges, where she witnessed the significant impact of these institutions—particularly Hispanic Serving Institutions—on their local communities.

One of Teresa’s most memorable achievements was leading a study abroad program in Oaxaca for California State University, Fresno. As the leader, teacher, and manager, she facilitated an enriching experience for students in printmaking, art history, and curatorship. The success of the program is a testament to her dedication and ability to create meaningful educational opportunities.

After opening a commercial art gallery in Oaxaca, Mexico, Teresa treated the space as a cultural hub, organizing programs that catered to Oaxaca’s diverse community. It was this experience that inspired her to return to the nonprofit sector and eventually led her to Tucson, where she found the perfect fit at Pima Foundation.

Outside of work, Teresa is a certified yoga teacher and has been leading classes since 2009. She’s also an avid mountain cyclist and hiker, reveling in Tucson’s outdoor beauty. At home, Teresa enjoys spending time with her two-year-old pug, Boni, who brings light and joy to her life.

Looking ahead, Teresa is excited to continue learning about philanthropy in higher education, with a long-term goal of leading a nonprofit team focused on environmental awareness projects for at-risk, diverse communities through the arts.

At Pima Foundation, Teresa has joined a dynamic team, with the philanthropic goals of championing Pima Community College. Her passion for providing educational tools and resources to Tucson’s community is evident in her daily work, and we are excited to have Teresa be a part of the team.
