The Future of Hospitality is Here – and It’s Local!

Last Friday, the Tucson community came together for a truly momentous occasion: the Grand Opening of the Hospitality Leadership Center of Excellence at Pima Community College’s Desert Vista Campus. The excitement was unmistakable as we celebrated this new chapter in hospitality education—one made possible through your unwavering community support and investment in our students.

Thanks to generous donors and investments, the Center of Excellence isn’t just another space—it’s a hub for opportunity, innovation, and workforce development. With cutting-edge facilities, real-world simulations, and immersive technology, Pima is now home to a premier destination for hospitality and culinary training in Southern Arizona.

Let’s take a closer look at the incredible spaces that are shaping the future of hospitality education:

The newly remodeled Aztec Grill now features a modern service counter, updated action stations, and dynamic digital menu signage. With new service line equipment and an automated Far UV-C disinfection system, it’s both high-tech and high-touch. Serving made-to-order meals, fresh snacks, and student-created culinary delights, the Grill is a go-to for grab-and-go bites on campus—and a working lab for students to hone their foodservice skills.

The Production Kitchen, is the heart of the accelerated Hospitality Fundamentals Certificate, a 16-week sprint into culinary excellence. Outfitted with stainless steel prep areas, commercial ovens, a walk-in fridge/freezer, and a Kitchen Display System, the Production Kitchen is designed for scale. It’s where students cater events, bake, and master the pace of a professional kitchen—ready to serve Tucson’s hospitality needs.

The bakery and pastry kitchen is a baker’s dream. With modern commercial baking equipment like a blast chiller and sugar warming boxes, it also doubles as a professional-grade demo kitchen. Featuring studio-quality recording and streaming capabilities, it allows for interactive classes, livestreamed events, and sweet experimentation in the pastry arts.

The showstopper of the Center is our state-of-the-art VR Lab located in the Learning Lab, where students can walk through a four-star hotel, mix virtual mocktails, and practice front desk service—all within a custom-built mixed reality simulation portal. With a mock front desk, fully equipped laundry facility, and housekeeping and maintenance carts, this space transforms theory into experience. Whether it’s hotel ops or restaurant management, students are learning by doing.

Lastly, the Bistro is an all-new student-run restaurant lets learners showcase their final skills before graduating with their A.A.S. in Hospitality Leadership. With modern lighting, new furnishings, and stylish privacy walls, the Bistro feels like a boutique restaurant—and gives students a taste of what it means to serve with excellence.

This new Center is more than just a place to learn—it’s a place to launch careers, spark innovation, and elevate Tucson’s hospitality and tourism industry. From immersive tech to hands-on experience, Pima students are now training in a space that rivals top programs nationwide.

It was a joy and an honor to be in attendance for such a momentous milestone in the College’s history—and we can’t wait to see how our students, partners, and community continue to grow from here.

Here’s to the future of hospitality—built right here in Tucson, one class, one dish, and one dream at a time.
