Graduates in black caps and gowns move through the crowd in clusters, adjusting tassels, taking photos, searching for family members in the stands. Some are smiling nervously, others laughing loudly with classmates they may never sit beside again. Phones are held high with proud parents wave from across the arena. For many students, this moment has been years in the making. For others, it probably felt impossible at one point, and yet, here they are.
On May 20, Pima Community College celebrated the graduating Class of 2026 during two commencement ceremonies held at the Tucson Convention Center Arena, marking an important milestone not only for students, but for the families, faculty, and communities who supported them along the way.
This year, 4,564 students graduated or became candidates for graduation, with PCC expected to award 5,916 degrees and certificates. Many students earned multiple credentials, each representing countless hours of studying, sacrifice, perseverance, and determination.
Marcy spoke during the ceremony, reflecting on the significance of graduation and the journeys that brought students to this day. Looking across the sea of caps and gowns, it was impossible not to think about the stories represented in the room.
The student who balanced coursework while working full-time.
The parent who attended classes between family responsibilities.
The first-generation college student navigating unfamiliar territory.
The returning learner who decided it was never too late to start again.
At Pima, those stories matter, and this graduating class carried many remarkable distinctions of its own.
The youngest graduate earned an Associate of Fine Arts at just 16 years old. The oldest graduate, at 80 years old, earned a Certificate in Business, proof that education is constant, no matter your age.
Among associate degree recipients, 241 students achieved a GPA of 3.90 or higher, qualifying for Highest Honors. Meanwhile, 1,361 students earned Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) certificates, helping prepare them for transfer opportunities and continued academic success.
But beyond the numbers, commencement is ultimately about transformation. It’s about students discovering what they are capable of.
This year’s largest associate degree programs Liberal Arts, Science, Business Administration, Nursing, and Cybersecurity—reflect not only student interests, but the evolving needs of our community and workforce. These graduates will move into classrooms, hospitals, businesses, technology fields, and organizations across Southern Arizona and beyond, carrying with them the knowledge and experiences gained at Pima.
As the ceremonies came to a close and graduates made their way out of the arena, we can’t help but take a moment to think about what’s next. A moment of recognition of how far someone has come, and a reminder that their story is still unfolding.
For the Class of 2026, the future is no longer something waiting in the distance, it’s already begun.
