During Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the vibrancy, history, and profound contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. For me, this celebration is deeply personal because it’s a moment to honor the unique blend of people that created my home: Puerto Rico.
To truly understand what it means to be Puerto Rican one must understand the family tree that stretches across continents and centuries. Our identity is a beautiful blend of our three ancestral pillars: the Taíno, the African, and the Spanish. As a Puerto Rican, we are not just a mix of cultures; we are a culture born from the mix.
The Taíno: Our Foundation of Heart
Before any ship touched our shores, the island of Borinquen, the Taíno name for Puerto Rico, was home to the Taíno people. Their spirit forms the very foundation of our character. From them, we inherited a strong sense of kindness and modesty, a deep connection to the land, and a welcoming, generous nature. The Taíno taught us to treat our neighbors as familia and to always keep our doors open. This is the seed of our hospitality.
The African: Our Strength and Sabor
The journey of the African people brought strength, resilience, and an undeniable sabor (flavor/spirit) to our island. Despite unimaginable hardships, our African ancestors infused our music, our food, and our language with a fascinating rhythm and energy that continues to define us. That unyielding inner strength (the ability to overcome and still find joy) is the heritage they gifted us. When a Puerto Rican shows grit, when our music makes you move, that is the echo of Africa.
The Spanish: Our Voice and Drive
From the Spanish settlers, we received the framework of our language, our faith, and a deep, historical connection to Europe. They gave us a rich vocabulary and passion that explains why we can be so expressive, and yes, sometimes a little loud! More importantly, they instilled an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to build, achieve, and create. It is a legacy of ambition and artistry that is evident in our literature, our architecture, and our drive to succeed around the world.
The richness of the Puerto Rican experience is not in celebrating these groups separately, but in celebrating their glorious fusion.
When the Taíno’s humble heart meets the African’s undeniable rhythm, and both are expressed with the Spanish passion for language, you get the unique, powerful, and utterly warm soul of a Boricua. We are the inheritors of an extraordinary resilience and an unparalleled capacity for joy. Our ability to welcome others, our strong familial bonds, and our vibrant self-expression all flow from this powerful cultural confluence.
Inspiring the Future
Our history is complex, marked by both joy and struggle, but it has shaped us into people who are uniquely positioned to inspire.
We honor the past not by simply remembering the names of our ancestors, but by living the best of their qualities: leading with kindness, pushing forward with resilience, and sharing our culture with a welcoming spirit. The future of Puerto Rico, and the wider Hispanic community, lies in the hands of those who carry this blend proudly. We are creating a future that is not only strong but is also deeply compassionate, proving that the blend of races creates not division, but a newer, stronger humanity.
And finally, we are a people defined by a magnificent, collective characteristic: an immense, unwavering pride in being Puerto Rican. This orgullo boricua is what connects us, whether we are on the island or anywhere else in the world. I am incredibly proud to be a product of this profound mix of the Taíno, the African, and the Spaniard, and I carry the soul of Borinquen with me always.
