What Will Your Legacy Be?

Rarely do we pause to think about what we’ll leave behind, which is why I want to mention August is Make A Will month. A gentle reminder that while planning for the future may not always be an easy conversation, it is one of the most meaningful gifts we can give to the people and the causes we care about most.

A will is not just about distributing assets, but it also provides clarity, peace of mind and ensures that your values continue long after you’re gone.

At Pima Foundation, we often talk about the power of investing in the future. Most of the time, that investment looks like scholarships, academic program support, all opportunities that help students achieve their dreams. For some supporters, that investment becomes something even more enduring, something we like to call, a legacy.

When you include Pima Foundation in your will or estate plans, you create a lasting impact that helps expand educational opportunities, strengthen academic programs and invest in the future of Southern Arizona. Planned giving is often more accessible than people realize, with options that can align with both your financial and philanthropic goals.

Still, many people delay creating a will simply because they don’t know where to begin.

The good news is that avoiding a few common mistakes can make the process much smoother for both you and the people you love.

The first is relying on generic online templates instead of working with an experienced attorney. The second is overlooking essential documents like a durable power of attorney, a healthcare proxy, or a living will. These documents help ensure your wishes are honored and can prevent unnecessary stress and uncertainty for your loved ones during difficult times.

Finally, creating a will doesn’t end when the paperwork is signed. An effective plan should include reviewing how your assets are titled, as well as considering your insurance, investments, and tax planning to ensure everything works together to support your long-term goals.

A will isn’t something you create once and forget, but rather evolves with you as you endure life. As families grow, priorities shift, and new opportunities emerge, your plan should grow with you.

If you’ve ever considered including Pima Foundation in your legacy plans, or if you’re simply wondering what planned giving could look like, I promise you, it’s okay that you don’t have all the answers because I know someone who could help.

Whether you’re exploring your options, looking to learn more about planned giving, or simply want to begin the conversation, Diana Cannon, our Philanthropy Manager, is available as a resource to help connect you with information and answer questions about creating a legacy that reflects your values. There is never any obligation, just an opportunity to explore what is possible.

As August reminds us to think about the future, perhaps the question we should ask ourselves is What kind of difference do I want to make instead of what will I leave behind?
